USER RESEARCH
PROBLEM STATEMENT
This app design aims to address the problem identified through the following problem statement, and inspiration from the personal struggles of the members of the team:
“With over 1.1 billion users subscribed across 9 different streaming platforms, the global access to movies is greater than it’s ever been. Yet, with such a wide selection of options, many users struggle with deciding on a movie to watch. According to a Vox study, users average 45 hours a year deciding what to watch next, averaging 7.4 minutes a day. While seemingly insignificant, the algorithms put in place to solve this problem have made it worse.”
NEEDS ANALYSIS
Working from our problem statement, we started to collect data through an Online Survey. From the survey, we were able to determine these key findings.
A vast majority of the participants don’t have apps they currently use to help decide on a movie to watch, though the majority of them expressed frustration with the task.
The main source of movie decision making from participants was suggestions through word of mouth or through the streaming platforms they use.
When asked: “If there was an app that gave you a curated selection of 3 to 5 movies based on your interests, would you use it?” all but one of the participants said yes.
IDEATION/MARKET RESEARCH
Data collection led to further exploration of the concept, resulting in the creation of the proposed solution: an app built around creating a curated selection of films (4 to 5) that would be chosen and proposed to the user.
We found two different programs trying to do this: Random Movie Picker and PickAMovieForMe.com. We also considered applications such as IMDB and Letterboxd as helpful tools for selecting movies.
What we found lacking within these programs was random suggestions that were consistent with specific preferences of the user.
INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
Going into the production of the app, the information architecture was built to examine the pages needed to fulfill our desired outcomes. The information architecture focused on getting the user to the prime directive of the app, which is to have the app select random movies for you.
THUMBNAIL SKETCHES
working off the Information architecture, we worked out a multitude of thumbnail sketches, exploring the options for what layout we would use for the app’s design
LOW FIDELITY MOCKUPS
From the sketches, we were able to move into Figma, building low fidelity mockups of the design, working without color or images.
FINAL MOCKUPS AND PROTOTYPE
From our low fidelity mockups, we incorporated color and imagery, also landing on the name Cinelect. From there, we undertook several phases of critique, resulting in the development of the final prototype.
